What are Soundscapes?

Has anyone ever asked you, "What does New York sound like?"  It's a bit of a strange question.  What does any city sound like?

I know that New York City smells like exhaust from the thousands of taxis, mixed with street vendors selling bratwurst.  I know what New York City looks like, with its tall skyscrapers, pedestrians crossing streets just before the walk signs light up.   What many people don't notice is what the city sounds like.  New York, along with each and every city and town in the world, has its own sound:  A soundscape.

The word "soundscape" can mean a few things.  You can easily relate it to the word landscape, which is a visual representation of the physical area of land - a couple fine examples of landscapes include a majority of Ansel Adams photography, along with some of Monet's famous paintings.

Soundscapes
are the collection of sounds in any particular environment, whether it be a busy street, canyon winds or the chatter in a local bar.  Sounds are omnipresent - even when you're attempting silence, you can hear the processes of your body's nervous and circulatory systems, among others.

Some soundscapes can be modified to form a collage similarly to  Karen Ku's Coastal Sunset, shown below.
